WHAT: the search for a cafe!
WARNINGS: WARNING: RNG HOTEL FLOORS AHEAD

[by now, everyone is probably aware of the broken espresso machine, which has yet to be replaced. for most people, this probably isn't an issue!1 but for Akira, Mr. Coffee-is-my-Blood. . .]

[. . . this morning, he can be found sprawled out next to the elevators on a random floor, face planted into the carpet and arms and legs sprawled akimbo at his sides. he is muttering something to himself]

. . . how hard is it. . . to find. . . a S████████ . . . in a hotel that has more floors than any building needs. . .

[LIGHT WHINING]

[anyway, he's being dramatic. help a guy out? maybe??? or make fun of his suffering? it is up to you!]

[For the second time, she finds herself leaning over him. Again, Akira?]

You don't sound so sleepy this time.

[Just weary. It's debatable which is worse.]

[LISTEN. . . SOMEONE BROKE THE ESPRESSO MACHINE :(]

[rolls over onto his back and stares up at her with a blank expression, made especially difficult to read due to the sand caked across his glasses]

I'm not sleepy, but I do have a killer headache.

[Boy, your glasses.]

What for?

[She does not know what a S████████ is.]

Caffeine withdrawal.

[. . . pushing himself up, shaking sand out of his curly locks]

[She pulls back to give him space, realization dawning.]

Is this about the missing espresso machine?

[grumble grouch]

This place is supposed to have a ton of cafes. . . why can't I find any of them?

I believe Sumina mentioned compiling a list. Why don't you ask her?

I want to, it's just--

[. . . climbs up to his feet, dusting himself off]

[She cants her head to the side. Show her? All right.]

[he guides her towards the elevator, of course, and punches one of the buttons. when the doors open with a soft ding, he steps aside]

You first?

[Because it's the gentlemanly thing to do? Or . . .

Reiju wordlessly shoots Akira a polite smile before stepping inside the elevator.]

[BECAUSE IT'S GENTLEMANLY!!]

[but he does slip in pretty quickly after her]

According to Odette, there's a S████████ on floor-- [INSER FLOOR HERE. also how the hell has the hotel censored his speech??? mystery]

[anyway, he reaches out to press the corresponding button]

Watch what happens.

[and the elevator shifts as it starts to take them up!]

[The hotel is mysterious, as are the people in it. The men, regardless of age, are all so chivalrous.

Akira says to watch, so Reiju watches. Her gaze flits from the button to the screen indicating the movement of the elevator through the floors. Is it going to take them somewhere else? Akira can't seem to catch a break.]

[for a moment, it seems like it's going to take them exactly where he wants to go. but. . .]

[a few floors before their destination, the lights on the buttons begin to randomly flicker on and off. the elevator doesn't shake-- it keeps moving on as normal, until it eventually comes to a slow stop on. . . floor 7!]

[SPOOKY LIBRARY FLOOR]

[the doors slowly open, and Akira gestures at. . . well. this!]

I guarantee you there is no coffee here.

[Well, that's different. Reiju arches her visible eyebrow at cobwebs that coat the library, conceding that Akira might just be right about that coffee.]

Have you tried the stairs?

[despite everything, Akira strolls easily into the spooky library, hands in his pockets. he actually hasn't seen this floor yet, so. . .!]

Do you have the stamina to walk up 20 flights of stairs?

[She follows a step behind to his side, arms crossed below her chest.]

If there's something at the top.

[. . . but at the same time. . .]

Well, better to do heavy exercise with a friend than alone, right?

[is 20 flights of stair-climbing worth it for coffee? maybe]

[Oh, how bold.]

Should we look for the stairs, then?

[She doesn't mind looking around the library, but he seemed in desperate need of caffeine earlier. He must still be desperate, if he's toying with this idea.]

[she has no idea how desperate he is]

Sure. . . though, come to think of it, I actually don't know if there are stairs in this hotel.

[still, stairwells are usually located at the ends of long hallways, right? TIME TO TRAVERSE THE LIBRARY TO FIND. . . THE STAIRWELL]

I've used them before, though not here.

[The library isn't so narrow that they can just make a beeline for the end. Who knows how much the structure here follows the more regular floors? She isn't in a rush, though, so she keeps pace with him, looking around as they go.]

If you had to read a book, what would you choose?

[as they search for the stairwell, they pass through aisle after aisle of old, dusty books. Akira gives each aisle a cursory, curious glance, though not curious enough for him to stop]

Hm? That's a random question. . .

[but he can't say it came out of nowhere]

. . . it'd depend on my mood, I guess. Right now, I could go for a good high fantasy book.

[They can always stop by again later. Right now he's desperate for caffeine.

She looks at him, mildly curious.]

High fantasy?

Mmm. Stories about knights and wizards, dragons and unicorns-- that kind of thing.

[. . . which. . . he now realizes may be real life for some people here]

So that's what's fantastical to you.

[It's a collection of people and creatures that boys would like, she supposes.]

I've heard that wizards can grant wishes.
