day by day at night
Is this for that book club?
no subject
Oh, Reiju. Good evening. No this isn't book club preparations although I was planning to cap off the night with that.
[Clickey-clackety!]
This is school work.
no subject
[The focus is admirable. Reiju knows she's interrupting, so she doesn't mind. It's a good opportunity for her own eyes to wander and take in the small details.]
You're a teacher. What do you teach?
no subject
I teach language arts to teens between the ages of fifteen and eighteen. We call them high schools or secondary schools. You might have something similar but I don't want to assume.
Basically, it's a lot of book reading, writing, and analysis. It's rather broad but it's a subject they need to pass in order to take on higher learning.
no subject
Those are critical skills to have. Books are one of the backbones of learning, aren't they?

morning!
I need to get me one of those...
[ About the mug. Not the wayward espresso. ]
Can't you just have coffee instead? People around here are sure serious about their espresso...
no subject
It's not the same, Gojo-sensei; it's not strong enough for one thing.
[Amelia yawns into her empty mug before tugging her blanket around her shoulders.]
On that note, I do have a question for you.
no subject
Eh? About the espresso machine? I already told you they weren't supposed to break it.
[ These consequences aren't on him!!! (They kind of are.) ]
no subject
Do you even feel bad about what happened to the machine?
no subject
I feel bad it got broken, I guess. Once someone noticed it was gone, I would have put it back.
[ ...Probably. But would've-could've-should'ves have no value for the departed espresso machine now! ]

all nighter
It's that still-foreign click-clacking that draws his attention towards the lounge as he passes, and rather than continue on his way to the kitchen, he alters course to investigate. Somehow, he can't say he's surprised to see their resident hard at work at this hour. She does seem the sort.]
That doesn't look like vacationing to me, Ms. Stein- Amelia.
[He remembered!]
no subject
The typing pauses when she hears her name being said. It doesn't take her long to recognize the voice because Gale's is unmistakable to her. Somehow.
She continues typing without looking up from her screen as she responds to the wizard.]
It certainly isn't but I think some credit is due because I am working out in the lounge instead of my room. I'm making sure to designate a workspace that is separate from the place where I rest.
[that's still workaholic-ing tho]
You're up rather late yourself. I don't imagine it's to fulfill any leftover work you may have on your end.
no subject
[Gale, you sweet summer child.]
I was doing a bit of reading, but found myself feeling rather restless. I thought I might do a bit of after-hours exploring, see what else this hotel of ours has to offer. Are you grading papers, then?
no subject
[The typing is finished after a click on the period she pushes her screen down halfway so she can converse with Gale politely. It's no good to keep working and talking at the same time even though she's more than capable of multitasking.]
And you're exploring? This late at night?
[Not that there's anything stopping them. Late-night exploration could be considered a type of indulgence itself but it also felt unsafe in that regard, though not any more than during waking hours.]

[His brows lift slightly, his interest and surprise quite genuine— he has a lot to learn about modern technology and how it may or may not interface with a clearly magical realm like this one— but he has to admire her work ethic.
Rather than wait for an answer, he offers her one of his patented smiles.]
After a snack, yes— or so I intended. Who knows what secrets I might stumble across while the staff expects us all to be asleep in our beds!

in the morning
But he can be bothered now, propelled by the need to explore his new "home". Curiosity banishes plenty of unflattering things away, and he'll even engage in conversation if he has to, falling into that old, old habit of courteousness. As easy as riding a bike again.
He finds a woman looking relatively... groggy in the breakfast area. Espresso machine? He recalls, only very vaguely--and maybe with memories that aren't really his, oops--what that is.]
What about normal coffee?
["what about normal coffee" cry out the group of fools who think it's just as good of a substitute]
no subject
You are not the first person to suggest that and once again I must emphasize that "coffee" and "espresso" are not the same. The former is made with coarser grinds and more water, the latter is a finer grind, with less water, and—
[Amelia had been waving around her "Tears of My Students" mug and stopped because god, she was about to do a lecture way too early in the morning.]
Just... Here, look.
[She tucks one arm behind her blanket and with her other hand that has the mug dangling off of her fingers, she summons a projection of the coffee drink guide she linked to Winter during the outburst. It's all in green glowing outlines but the basic information should get across.]
This is what we're lacking without a convenient machine for us to make our own drinks when the other areas won't suffice.
no subject
He waits, patiently, for her to finish talking. And then, gently-]
Someone's grouchy.
[lol
He waves a hand through the projection out of little more than curiosity and a partly idle, dismissive gesture. Interesting.]
Have you considered that maybe you're a little too dependent on certain stimulants, then, to get through the morning?
no subject
And someone has never had a properly made espresso or any of these drinks to appreciate the artistry or taste differences.
[Grumbling, she pinches the bridge of her nose before waving away the projection.]
Look. I apologize for the snippiness but I've found myself rather impatient with the perpetrators who broke the machine and I'm still in the habit of waking up early even though I don't need to. Occupational habit.
no subject
Henry has a mind to leave it at that, to stop arguing the point and let her wallow in her espresso-less life alone. But she offers a somewhat huffy apology, and that’s enough to leave him planted here for a little longer.]
“Perpetrators?” Someone’s broken the machine on purpose? That’s [funny, in a mean way] strange.
What’s your occupation that makes you wake up so early? I used to have one of those, too, and plain coffee was good enough for me.

keyboard ASMRunfamiliar clickety-clackety of Amelia's keyboard. Huh......She keeps on, for now, only offering Amelia a brief nod and wave of her hand and a smile if she happens to notice the half-elf walking by, but... After disappearing into the elevators and beyond for some time, she then returns with a plate full of snacks of both savory and sweet varieties, all intentionally picked out to go with her cup of black tea. ]
Some snacks to fuel you through a bout of late night working, Miss Amelia?
no subject
[Amelia had caught sight of Sumina and returned the nod before focusing down again but hadn't expected her to return. With snacks and more black tea even.]
That's very kind of you to do Sumina. You didn't have to but I really appreciate it.
[She pats a spot on the table to let her set it down.]
I think you brought more than I can finish though so if you'd like you could join me.
[Compared to most people in the hotel so far, Sumina's grown on Amelia enough that the solitary witch feels alright enough to extend such an invitation.]
no subject
Think nothing of it, Miss Amelia! And... Hah, I don't mind helping you out with the food, if it's all the same to you.
[ Having floated around in space does have her feeling a bit peckish for a midnight snack... ]
Is that another, ah... [ gesturing at the laptop ] Reading device?
no subject
[Amelia wouldn't be able to explain how a laptop works but just how she uses it and what she can do on it. It has been rather amusing explaining modern knick-knacks to those unfamiliar with it and it makes the witch think about how perhaps, despite the wonders of magic in her world, human inventions were the real marvel.
She types out another sentence on her document with the keys clicking pleasantly.]
I'm also writing documents on it. Well, typing anyway.
