Happy February, folks! The hotel is chugging along as it always does and nothing really seems that out of the ordinary, actually. Mr Bennet is at the front desk as per usual, greeting new guests, checking out old ones, generally being mediocre at his job but there's something a little... off about him this morning. A little more Springtime focused. Is it the suit? No, no, that's the same as it always is. Is it the face? No, Mr Bennet's face is unable to be perceived by eyes as per usual. No, it's the —

The bunny ears?

HOP TO IT

It seems Mr Bennet has developed a pair of bunny ears and a tail overnight, but he's not the only one. Every staff member and guest of the hotel will find that they have grown a pair of animal ears and a matching tail when they wake up that morning. It's nekomimi time, y'all! But not just neko, characters will find themselves with all categories of ears and tails. Cats, dogs, rabbit, deer, fish. Whatever animal best suits the characters are what they'll find themselves sporting.

For all intents and purposes, these will be part of your characters bodies and real additional limbs. It will hurt if someone hurts them and they will bleed if someone cuts them. There will be some added bonuses as well as characters will also take on the traits of the animals they become. However players want to interpret this is up to them — it can be light like a cat person just being more aloof or heavy like a spider person having multiple eyes and limbs. Whatever is most fun for the player and most hectic for the character, of course.

This effect will last till the end of the month.

Of course, an additional note: For characters who already have animal ears and/or tails — they will either keep those ears and tails and develop more traits of that animal. Or they can become something entirely different for the month. Player preference!

ANIMAL CRACKERS

Mr Bennet has found this to be hysterical though so he has set up a stall in the main lounge that's advertising animal crackers. They're a little less cracker and more cookie though, and larger than the traditional animal cracker. They also come in all shapes and sizes. If you can think of the animal, you can have an animal cracker with it. There is a dog cracker. There is a whale cracker. There is a spider cracker. All kinds of things. Even fictional animals, like gryphons and dragons!

The only catch is — once your character eats the cracker they will become that animal entirely. This is probably tipped off by the bunny rabbit hopping around the lounge in a little hotel jacket, huh. Thanks Mr Bennet. The effect of these crackers will last as long as the player prefers and characters are free to eat another cracker and become another animal afterwards.

One thing though, as the animal, characters will still be able to speak in animal form. So there's that!

The animal crackers will also be available till the end of the month.

[ Charlie has yet to even consider that their animal characteristics might come into play here. He's just a lil guy taking a rest. ]

Couple hours at best. My advice, maybe don't get any animal crackers with your lunch.

But hey, I appreciate it. If you don't mind a passenger, I'm feeling a bit— [ heh ] —peckish.

[ Pun definitely intended. ]

[ Just a lil guy! Nanami feels vaguely like Snow White right now, with how he's just talking to a little bluebird on his shoulder. But he'll start walking again, making sure to go slowly so Charlie can remain steady. He's heading for one of the cafes on the first floor, nowhere too special. ]

Good to know, I'll steer clear.

[ The pun is...... terrible and Nanami's eyes do narrow slightly behind his sunglasses but he is not going to acknowledge it. ]

I'm always up for company with a meal so this is fine with me. I wonder if you can eat normal foods like this or only what a bluebird might eat.

[ Whistle while you work, Nanamin!

Charlie hunkers down, bobbing along with Nanami's movements without too much issue. ]

Hm. I won't lie, a pile of sunflower seeds sounds great right now. I'm not sure I could tackle a burger or something as I am anyway.

[ The urge to whistle is absolutely there. It is tempting. ]

Then I will ask the staff if they have any. I'm sure they'll be able to accommodate you.

[ And they're at the cafe! Nanami is going to push the door open and make his way inside. He'll sit at a table near the window, where sunlight seems to be coming through and the view is a nice park. Of course, it's not real, but it feels real and so Nanami hopes Charlie will enjoy it.

He'll hold up his hand for Charlie to hop onto his palm so he can set him down on the table instead, if he'd like. He's also free to stay on his shoulder if he'd prefer that too. ]

I'm Nanami Kento, by the way. I'm assuming you're another guest of the hotel, yes?

Really? I appreciate it.

[ Once Nanami is settled at their table, Charlie hops down from his shoulder to perch on the tabletop, sitting opposite the other man. ]

That's right. I just arrived not too long ago, actually. I'm Charlie! Nice to meet you.

[ The urge to call him Charlie-kun is high because he is a tiny little bluebird and it's so cute. Ahhh. Do not do it, Nanami. ]

Oh, welcome to Hotel Caelum then, Charlie-san.

[ THERE WE GO. NAILED IT. ]

Are you intending to stay for a while?

Thank you. Glad to be here.

[ He is kind of "Charlie-kun" shaped right now, isn't he? He probably wouldn't have argued it too much, given the circumstances. ]

Yeah, I think so. You know, provided I'm not stuck like this for as long as I'm here. An extended vacation sounds nice.

No, I imagine it'll wear off soon enough. The hotel doesn't want you to have a bad time, just an interesting time, I've noticed.

[ He sure is!! It's still so tempting. Still, the waiter comes by soon enough and Nanami opts to order himself a chicken katsu sandwich with a side of green tea and then, without missing a beat, he asks for a pile of sunflower seeds for his friend.

It says something about the hotel that the waiter doesn't even blink and just writes it down on his notepad before leaving. Huh. ]

Well, I look forward to seeing what you look like when you're not a bird.

[ Charlie wasn’t sure what to expect from the staff, but it’s quite clear that they’re used to shenanigans of this sort. That’s good to know. It makes him feel a bit better about slinging his magic around – you know, when he has hands to do the casting with. ]

Oh, you know. Dashing. Handsome. [ A beat. ] Blonde.

[ A tilt of his head here. What a description. ]

That narrows things down significantly.

[ Said in the most deadpan. Is he being sarcastic?? ]

Are you human, at least?

[ Oh, Nanami, you're already reminding him of a friend of his. ]

Yeah, I'm human. Kind of on the short side. Blonde hair, blue eyes, beard. In case you needed it narrowed down anymore.

[ Hopefully that's a good thing. Nanami considers, ears twitching a little as he asks — ]

Is it the beard that makes you dashing or is that you all on your own?

[ He's joking!! In his own Nanami way. At the very least, after he asks his question the waiter comes back with Nanami's sandwich and a little tiny bowl full of sunflower seeds for the birdie.

When Nanami picks up his sandwich to take a bite though, it'll be clear he has very intimidating wolf fangs along with the wolf ears and tail. Spooky. But either way, he seems to be fine making pleasant conversation with Charlie. ]

Oh, that's all me, but the beard does add to my charm.

[ Not Charlie flirting with a wolf man while he's stuck as a bird.

When the waiter comes back, Charlie bobs his head in the bird version of a thank you, hopping over to peck at the seeds. Instinct guides him well in this regard because it's not like he's ever eaten with a beak before. ]

I can safely say this is the strangest lunch outing I've ever been on, but nice. The company makes up for a lot.

[ Look, someone's gotta do it and Charlie's the man for the job. ]

[ Is it? Is it good to know, Nanami? Nanami's eyes track Charlie as he hops over to the bowl and starts pecking at the seeds. It's kind of interesting to watch and Nanami can't help but wonder how he'd make an attempt of eating with a beak if he was stuck like that. Seems difficult.

He chews his sandwich slowly and raises an eyebrow at Charlie's compliment, and despite his blank expression — his tail will wag, just a little. Aw. ]

I can say the same. You are, indeed, the most pleasant bird I've talked to. I look forward to seeing you settle in our little community here at the hotel.

[ Charlie's probably fine with his little snack as long as he doesn't actively think about the act of eating. The conversation is definitely helping. ]

You're just saying that because I'm probably the only bird you've talked to. [ A laugh, though it comes out more like birdsong than anything else. ] Still, thanks for the warm welcome. It's not quite as shenanigan-free as I was hoping, but it's still pretty nice here.

[ That's good. Nanami is more than happy to chat while they eat, especially if it helps Charlie actually eat. ]

For now. Who knows what tomorrow will bring?

[ Maybe more birds! ]

I'm glad to hear that. Are you someone who is used to the whole "people from different worlds" thing or is your home a bit more normal? I've talked to a few guests here with varied experiences.

[ Maybe more birds! But Charlie won't be one of them. He learned his lesson about animal crackers. ]

The former. Though, before coming here, I hadn't personally met anyone from another world. It's the kind of thing I hear stories about secondhand.

[ He is cute enough without being a tiny birdie. ]

Huh, so it exists but it's rare. That's a new one. It isn't anything like that where I come from. Which is Earth, by the way. Tokyo, Japan. Not sure if you're familiar with that or not.

I'm from earth, also. Colorado, United States. Maybe we're not from the same earth and maybe not. It's kind of hard to tell.

[ Nanami nods then, considering. ]

A similar one, at least. There are people here from different planets — I met someone who calls his planet Gaia. I imagine it has none of the same continents we're familiar with.

[ He bites his sandwich then, chewing slowly for a moment before he adds — ]

It can be a real rabbit hole to understand.

I think it's neat, even if it's kind of a lot. When else would we get a chance to learn about so many worlds and the people who live there?

[ He punctuates his question by dipping back into the bowl for more seeds. ]

It's so cool.

[ It's kind of funny hearing the enthusiasm and the words said by Charlie because that's... exactly what he feels? He just wouldn't say it so explicitly, so enthusiastically.

He feels a little sheepish as he responds with — ]

It... is.

[ He wishes he could show as much enthusiasm but he's kind of lost that ability somewhere along the way. ]

Other worlds like this don't exist where I come from. Being able to experience them so closely is a privilege. It makes me wonder if we'll be able to visit someone else's home when leaving the hotel instead of returning to our own.

[ Which sure would be nice, in his particular case. ]

[ Charlie has enough enthusiasm for them both, even if it's crammed into a tiny bird body at the moment. He lifts his head from the bowl, beady eyes alight with excitement. ]

Ohhhhh. I never thought of that. That would be awesome! I'd love to go world-hopping!

[ It's kind of cute, watching the bird get all excited about it between eating his sunflower seeds. Aw... ]

I think I would too. If only to see things I haven't seen before. I don't get to travel much back home, and this would be the ultimate form of that, wouldn't it?

Oh, yeah. Absolutely. Hopefully traveling by hotel magic means no jet lag, either!

[ He's hilarious. ]
