Event Log #004

EVENT LOG
number 004

Happy New Year, folks! The Hotel is settling into the New Year with little fanfare. Mr Bennet remains at his post behind the hotel desk and helps check guests in and out daily. The Hotel continues to hustle and bustle and nothing seems to be going too awry beyond the usual shenanigans. In fact, one might even call this the slow season for the Hotel.

THE FLOOR IS LAVA

That is until the second week of the month where the intercoms start with Mr Bennet's pleasant voice coming through.

"Hello, hello! This is just a small warning that one of our floors, the current 79th floor to be exact, has had a small... malfunction, I suppose, and will be affecting the other floors of the Hotel. No word yet from maintenance when this will be over, so stay on your toes, my dear guests!"

And that's it. No indication of what the problem is, or anything like that. It's up to you to figure out what's going on! And what is going on? Well, it'll become obvious very quickly when wherever characters happen to be in the Hotel, they'll soon start feeling a very obvious warmth on the floor below them. It'll increase the longer they stay standing in one spot until it's almost burning their feet.

The only salve for this will be hopping onto a nearby piece of furniture and getting their feet off the floor. It'll soon become obvious that the entire Hotel has been wrapped in a game of The Floor is Lava, including the floor turning into actual lava on some of the floors.

SAFETY SLEEPOVER

Of course, the Hotel is not cruel enough to make the entire Hotel unsafe and soon enough Mr Bennet's voice will come through on the intercom again.

"For those looking for respite from our current Hotel wide game," because clearly it's a game now. "We'll be serving tea and cake in the lounge on the ground floor. Maintenance has been able to fix the lounge for now so feel free to come by when you can if you'd like to rest. We have sleeping bags!"

As folks enter the lounge, they'll find that Mr Bennet is true to his word. The lounge has been converted into a giant sleepover, with sleeping bags lining the floor and a long table off to the side where people can eat their tea and cakes. Mr Bennet is near the food table, handing out pajamas, toothbrushes, and sleep masks to those who request them. There's some new doors off to the side leading to some restrooms, at least, so guests can change in private.

Though, one thing to point out is when Mr Bennet says there's tea and cakes, the cakes happen to be lava cakes. He thinks he's funny.

THE FLOOR IS ICE

It'll take about two days for hotel maintenance to fix the Hotel and return it to normal. So that's two days of living out of the lounge or hopping around the Hotel to get places. What a headache. Mr Bennet will make another lively announcement on the intercom.

"We are back in business, folks! I've just been given word that everything should have return to normal now. Though, there is a warning to make sure not to walk around barefoot for at least another day or so while the Hotel settles. Thank you for your patience!"

What that means becomes obvious soon as anyone walking around now will feel that the floor is especially cold. That's a bit better than the heat, at least, but still kind of a pain in the ass. Anyone who tries to walk around barefoot will find that their feet quickly start to freeze but any permanent damage is easily avoidable by putting on some socks or getting off the floor entirely.

Though that said, the ice does lead to some furniture sliding around and even with shoes on, characters might find themselves sliding too.

What a lovely end to the holidays.

[ At the question she asks and the way she grins so sharply in response, he's reminded of Gojo for a moment and just how unbearable he is when he comes to propositioning the impossible. Nanami's mouth pulls tight for a moment as he considers how to respond.

But then again, this is his vacation and he's supposed to be agreeing to things. ]

If that's a genuine offer, I will accept. Otherwise, I'm fine to try and slide my way to the elevators the normal way.

[ He's yes and-ing this shit!! ]

[Maybe his dry attempt at humor earlier made her wonder if she could get his buy-in on something like this... or his willingness to yes-and their situation takes her by surprise. Either way, it would be a poor showing to fail to roll with it, when he's done such a good job adapting.]

Wheels are gonna have shit-all for traction on the floor if it's fully frozen over... so our ride's only good until the end of the stacks.

[Though it sounded like an unhinged and offhanded joke of a suggestion, she's put more thought into the actual logistics of hastening their escape by book cart than it might have seemed from the initial comment.] Worth?

[ This is either going to end in disaster or they'll somehow actually make it out alive, Nanami realizes. Probably disaster though. Is he really agreeing to this? Well, yes. Of course he is. He said he would and so here he is.

So, he nods in answer to her question. ]

If anything, it'll be an interesting experience.

[ And so he stands up straight, bracing himself against the bookshelf and prepares himself to move when she's ready. ]

Already makes it worth doing, doesn't it?

[There's boisterous zest in her voice that might betray a hint of actual excitement. His heart might not be fully in it yet, but it seems like he isn't just agreeing out of convenience, either.

With effortless struggle, Odette stretches out to reclaim the cart from where it slid during the last shift and pats its shelf.
]

Hop on. I've captained rowdier vessels than this one.

[Actual seafaring knowledge will only go so far in a situation like this one - that is, almost not at all, but that tenacity might just be what they need to navigate the ice until their ride craps out.]

[ Oh, he's. Going to be in so much pain soon, he realizes. He really did agree to this. He's going to do this. This is going to end in disaster.

But he's still got a young man's body!! He's twenty-seven!! He can do this!!

So, yeah, he slides over to her a little wobbly like and then hops up on the cart, holding its sides in order to keep himself steady on it. ]

Remind me to ask you about those vessels if we don't die.

[Wow? Talk about a complete lack of faith.]

I won't die, [she says with a confidence that goes well beyond cockiness.] Whatever's gonna happen to you, you're on your own.

[There's a distant but ever-closer clattering as boos begin spilling from shelves, the slippery floor no longer able to maintain complete equilibrium in the library.]

Welp, time to go. [Odette brings up a heavily muscled leg, braces it on the cart, and kicks off. Speed isn't going to be a problem, but steering quickly reveals itself as the most problematic. Nanami might feel her body weight shifting at the back of the vehicle to maintain what drift she can as she shoot down between two rows of stacks.]

[ Oh. This is. Yeah, this is worse than he expected it to be but alright. He keeps a tight grip on the top of the cart, breath caught in his throat as she pushes off and they start careening down the aisles between the shelves. He almost wants to squeeze his eyes shut in order not to witness what's happening but no, no, keep them open, Kento.

So, yeah, he doesn't say anything. Doesn't yell or scream or do anything than look slightly pale and blank faced while gripping the cart so hard his knuckles turn white. Help. ]

[It's worse than he thought? This is going swimmingly. They haven't crashed, the bookshelves are keeping them on rails... she's mapping out the full length of their route in her head already.

He's handling this pretty well, but Odette's seen enough wobbly legs and pale faces in her lifetime. She laughs, picking up a book thick and heavy enough to be an encyclopedia volume from the cart.
]

Don't go hurling on me, now! I need you to keep up with our Dewey Decimals here and tell me when we gotta make a turn.

[ They haven't crashed yet by the grace of god. He just continues holding on as they continue careening forward. The momentum given to them by the slanted floor means they really aren't going to slow down anytime soon. Dear god.

He looks at the book she picks up and at her request, looking baffled. What. She wants him to flip through that book while doing this? ]

I will not. If I let go of this cart, I'm going to fall off.

[ Plus, they can just... use their eyes! Probably! ]
