EVENT LOG number 002 The hotel humbly hopes that you're settling in well and are taking advantage of the various pleasures on offer for your stay. In Mr Bennet's opinion, things have been going quite well and he doesn't think that the guests are unhappy at all. New guests have arrived, some have left, it's all going along perfectly. So, of course, this is when the next troublesome thing pops up. SHADOWS One morning, characters will find the hotel to be a little dimmer than usual, a little more shadowy. Yet if anyone asks Mr Bennet about it, he will claim to not have noticed anything different than usual. Either way, as the characters move on with their day, they'll start to notice a few odd things start to happen. PHASE ONE: Initially, characters will notice their shadow beginning to move a little out of sync with them. Discreetly at first until eventually, their shadow takes on a life of its own, mischievously playing with characters and enjoying their newfound freedom. Very Peter Pan, and completely harmless. PHASE TWO: Now, shadows might disappear entirely, roaming the hotel to their own discretion and ignoring the characters they belong to. As the shadow takes on this free will, characters will begin to feel slightly off balance and have a hard time feeling whole without their shadow around. The shadow may become slightly aggressive as well if told they should return to their characters, fighting back in their own way from knocking things over to outright attacking other characters. It's a little hard to fight back though when your opponent is a shadow, isn't it? PHASE THREE: The shadows have become fully aggressive now, fighting anyone who tries to get them to return to their original person. Characters will find themselves feeling weak and low energy as a result of losing their shadow. Eventually, the shadows will come back to their owners but the characters will find themselves sinking into their shadow, eventually changing places entirely with their shadow. The only way to rescue a character from this fate is for another character to pull them out of their shadow forcibly. The bright side is once a character is pulled out of their shadow, it all returns to normal and their shadow is no longer sentient. These phases will last over the course of the week and it is quite alright to stay in phase one/two/three. Not all shadows will become aggressive, not all shadows will be playful. [ She sighs, sinking into the cushions of her armchair just a little bit more. She feels as if a part of her is missing, though rather than it somehow making her feel lighter, she feels so very weighed down. ]

I don't think it will be as simple as waiting for the effects to revert, I mean... I wonder if we should try to seek our own shadows out.

We'll need to. I doubt they'll be inclined to return on their own without coercion of some sort.

However, are you able to walk?

[ because it doesn't look promising. ]

[ How does one coerce their own shadow back into... shadowness. Well, if anyone can manage it, she imagines this gigantic woman clad in armor would be the one to do it. ]

I... Might only slow you down, but I think I can walk. Maybe I should get some espresso...

[likesitruff]

If at any point you think you cannot walk, merely say so.

[ You're so short, ma'am. ]

Right. I will... Actually—

[ Hm. Wait. Her voice stops abruptly, as she second-guesses herself. At length, she decides there's no harm in asking, especially considering the woman had carried her here. ]

...Would you mind if I leaned on you a bit as we went?

[likesitruff]

If I minded, I would not have you inform me. It would be more of an inconvenience if you kept your weakness to yourself.

[ She's not a mind reader, after all. Use her as you will, Sumina. ]

[airdnd]

Ah, of course. Not to worry, I have absolutely no delusions of strength on my part. I'm as weak as they come! Ahaha.

[ rip. ]

Then... Shall we?

[likesitruff]

Yes. At your ready. [ She'll offer her arm so Sumina can lean as comfortably as one can lean against a lady who's wearing full plate armor-- ]

[ And with a nod, she curls a hand around that armored arm... Or as much of it as she can, ma'am, ]

Given their penchant for troublemaking... Might you know what your shadow has been up to? Perhaps that would give us a clue for where to start.

[likesitruff]

Unfortunately I haven't seen it since it departed. It may have chosen to find a way to attempt to establish dominance, as befitting of a faerie of the Fang Clan.

[airdnd]

[ To... establish dominance... okay. ]

Oh, I— I hadn't realized that you were fey, ma'am. As far as - [ ahem ] - establishing dominance, how do you figure your shadow would be doing this...?

[likesitruff]

That's difficult to say... it might merely be clearing a path or shoving others aside, as dishonorable as that is...

[ A pause. ]

Very few people seem to know what I am, so I wouldn't worry about that.

[airdnd]

W-Well, shoving someone aside would certainly be rude, but on the light end of what could be considered dishonorable, I feel...

[ But still, it feels like ser knight really adheres to knightly conduct. It's a bit refreshing, considering the sort of hooligans she's often hosted at home... ]

I know it's hardly the time for it, but out of curiosity... Are you from the Feywild, by any chance?

[likesitruff]

That name is unknown to me. Would you be able to explain it further? Perhaps I know of it by a different name.

[ Because it sure doesn't sound familiar. ]

[airdnd]

Ah, yes - of course! I'd be happy to, ser. [ ahem. ] The Feywild is another name for the Plane of Faerie, a realm which exists in parallel with what we consider the Material Plane, where most living beings exist. Does that feel familiar?

[likesitruff]

... I see. In a sense, yes, though humans also dwelt in Faerie Britain. Granted, their treatment depended on the location. However, I learned of the existence of another Britain, something belonging to what they deemed "Proper Human History."

[ Hm. ] There, faeries were not as prominent.

Ah, then we're of different spheres...

[ Because that doesn't sound familiar to her at all, except perhaps in the way that the two planes echo one another. ]

So, then, are you from this... 'Faerie Britain,' in your world?

Yes, that's correct. I manifested there approximately four hundred years ago. We don't tend to have visitors all that often.

[airdnd]

[ Sumina doesn't even bat an eye at hearing her age, though she does bat an eye at her saying "manifested." Then again... just fae things, you know? ]

Where I'm from, it's rare for people to be able to visit the Feywild so easily, too. Usually certain conditions have to be met...

[likesitruff]

Conditions?

... I do know those who did come here most recently did so intentionally...

[ were these conditions made consciously? ]

[airdnd]

It's... Complicated, to say the least! And an area I'm certainly not an expert in... But tales of the Feywild sometimes say that one can only enter the Fey Realm at certain times of day, or during certain seasons, or through certain places... That sort of thing.

[likesitruff]

Then I believe it is indeed different... though I didn't quite have the opportunity to ask our visitors on the specifics of their arrival. I suppose they would have known if they'd had to plan it.

[airdnd]

I see...

[ Later, she'll have to invite Ser Barghest to chat about these guests some more, and to learn more about Faerie Britain, but for now, there are more pressing matters at hand... or on the floor. Is that one of their shadows trying to slink away along a wall!? ]

You dare to run!!

[ Well.

It's fine if she just hurls her sword at the shadow, right.

Barghest, it's a shadow. But she can't just run after it, she's supporting Sumina!! ]

[airdnd]

[ oh. oH. That's a whole-ass sword being flung into a wall!? Innkeeper Sumina can't help but shriek because all she can think of is the property damage. But at once, she does let go of Barghest's arm, leaning over and supporting herself on the wall once more. ]

G-Go, ma'am. I can— I can wait here!

[ Allowing this will surely be more productive than her just flinging her sword like that!! Especially since the Shadow just sort of... bends out of the way, and then does a little dance as if to taunt the warrior. ]
