EVENT LOG number 002 The hotel humbly hopes that you're settling in well and are taking advantage of the various pleasures on offer for your stay. In Mr Bennet's opinion, things have been going quite well and he doesn't think that the guests are unhappy at all. New guests have arrived, some have left, it's all going along perfectly. So, of course, this is when the next troublesome thing pops up. SHADOWS One morning, characters will find the hotel to be a little dimmer than usual, a little more shadowy. Yet if anyone asks Mr Bennet about it, he will claim to not have noticed anything different than usual. Either way, as the characters move on with their day, they'll start to notice a few odd things start to happen. PHASE ONE: Initially, characters will notice their shadow beginning to move a little out of sync with them. Discreetly at first until eventually, their shadow takes on a life of its own, mischievously playing with characters and enjoying their newfound freedom. Very Peter Pan, and completely harmless. PHASE TWO: Now, shadows might disappear entirely, roaming the hotel to their own discretion and ignoring the characters they belong to. As the shadow takes on this free will, characters will begin to feel slightly off balance and have a hard time feeling whole without their shadow around. The shadow may become slightly aggressive as well if told they should return to their characters, fighting back in their own way from knocking things over to outright attacking other characters. It's a little hard to fight back though when your opponent is a shadow, isn't it? PHASE THREE: The shadows have become fully aggressive now, fighting anyone who tries to get them to return to their original person. Characters will find themselves feeling weak and low energy as a result of losing their shadow. Eventually, the shadows will come back to their owners but the characters will find themselves sinking into their shadow, eventually changing places entirely with their shadow. The only way to rescue a character from this fate is for another character to pull them out of their shadow forcibly. The bright side is once a character is pulled out of their shadow, it all returns to normal and their shadow is no longer sentient. These phases will last over the course of the week and it is quite alright to stay in phase one/two/three. Not all shadows will become aggressive, not all shadows will be playful. [ listen. he'll have to settle for bottled green tea. she pushes herself up slowly and reaches for the glass. Tylenol in one hand; drink in the other. and she just stares down at both for a long moment before abruptly tossing them into her mouth and washing them down with a mouthful of tea. very much with the grim resolve one would generally reserve for self-surgery.

then she grips the glass between both hands and waits. ]

I thought I saw a dark mass fleeing to the left, yes.

[ Hm. ]

It ought not be left to its own devices. Do you intend to pursue it?

[This woman. Henry purses his lips together, arching a brow. It really is a little amusing, her acting like he just offered her poison.]

…Do you want me to hold your hand while we countdown the minutes?

[Sorry, he can’t help himself.]

[Hmmm... he brings a hand to his chin, pondering.]

Roughly a month ago? Give or take.

... Hm. I'll keep that in mind. If something that impacts the hotel as a whole occurs again within a month, we may be able to better prepare ourselves.

But, despite himself, he reaches out to grasp her hand. Better?]

Okay. Talk to me about something. We have thirty minutes or so before it should kick in.

[ Seems gentlemanly enough for her.... he tried to help a stranger, right? So he can't be a total brute, at least. ]

There is no need to apologize. I've already come to know that these apparitions are mischievous indeed... crafty enough to be difficult to corner alone.

[ Her eyes crease as she smiles, a gentle sea breeze ruffling her dark hair. Briefly, she glances about the beach for a sign of his shadow, her own still seemingly attached to her, though it only shadows her movement belatedly. ]

Might you need some assistance in your pursuit? It would be a pleasure to be of service — in return for your generosity.

[ There are plenty of things about this situation that bother Sumina, but in a list ordered from most top of mind to least, the temperature of Giselle's body is very likely to be near the bottom. Their joint safety remains at the very top, followed closely by what to do with the knife that is still embedded in Giselle's back, we cannot emphasize this enough!! No matter how unbothered the maid is by it, Sumina still doesn't feel it's right for her to run around with it there...

For now, though, their escape is the top priority, and as such, Sumina remains close, thinking only of how close they are to making it out of this room. When Giselle glances over, she would find Sumina's expression crumpled in determination and restlessness in equal measure, so when the door opens, the innkeeper is all too ready to get up to her own feet, following Giselle's motions to book it the hell out of here!!

Perhaps it's a bit futile, but since the door opening will alert them of the two's impending escape in any case, Sumina takes a moment to will her Mage Hands to cause some more confusion in their wake by pestering the two shadows, at least until whatever distance she and Giselle can put between themselves and the kitchen causes the magic to be dispelled. ]

[ only in the sense that she now has a hand to hold literally hostage, squeezing more tightly than you'd expect of such a small woman ]

Thirty minutes?! I could go to sleep faster and would not need to worry about coma!

[ Winter is hardly phased by the decor – or what passes for it. This is about what he expects from a wizard, and especially a wizard having a rough go of it. The models catch his interest briefly, but he lets it all pass without remark for now. ]

... Hm. You look like you should be in high school... Ah, but I guess a hotel like this wouldn't really care if a guest isn't attending for the time being.

[ Later, she'll have to invite Ser Barghest to chat about these guests some more, and to learn more about Faerie Britain, but for now, there are more pressing matters at hand... or on the floor. Is that one of their shadows trying to slink away along a wall!? ]

Ah— over there!

[ the fact that her own shadow is unattached does not go unnoticed, nor does it surprise him; it seems like everyone is having the same issue, which probably does preclude the need for apologies. Nevertheless, he can't help feeling at least somewhat responsible.

The offer has him looking a little perplexed. ]

There's nothing to thank me for. Besides, it's dangerous. You're better off minding your own shadow.

[ not to mention that he's not sure what he'll do when he "catches" it, if that's even possible - it's just a shadow. ]

Its size. Its potential. Two million people—artisans, scholars, lords with such incredible wealth. Its port, its guilds, its trade, its festivals. Griffons soaring through sky. Its Walking Statues. I barely know where to begin to explain to someone who has never even heard of it.

[ The shadows have truly been rather troublesome, somehow both incorporeal and tangible enough to cause havoc all at once, yet still Bruno manages to devise his own solution to the problem. A zipper gives way to an empty void on the ground beneath the shadow, and sure enough, it drops right into that space, and not a moment too soon. Just as it descends, a slit of light forms along the shadow's surface and opens to reveal a rather reptilian-looking eye, but all too soon it and the shadow are lost in the abyss.

Sumina watches, her grip against Bruno growing tighter when she meets that unsettling gaze, but they are rid of that eye soon enough. She heaves a sigh of relief and now, having fully emerged from her shadow after its final attempt to replace her, she is hale and whole.

Exhausted from the whole week's shenanigans, but at least she is in one piece again. ]

It... It worked...! Was that your power, Mister Bruno..?

[ When Sumina slumps against him, she will find no resistance from Limitless; instead, the hands that had grasped her own instead move around her shoulders. He's always been someone who expresses physical affection easily — been starved for it, really, for all he feels like he's an infinity away from everyone most of the time, but there's still something within him that stirs at this contact. Supporting another person like this isn't something he often gets to do.

He probably shouldn't be enjoying it, given what they just went through...he'll just think of it like this making them even, or something. ]

Hey...we should get you back to your room. Your shadow is giving you grief too, huh?

[ No one should have to go through that, if he can help it. ]

[ ...He would have, wouldn't he? He wouldn't have even questioned it. Even still, it's not so easy for him to accept the reality of being in a position of needing help in the first place. ]

[ After another moment, he straightens up, stepping back from Winter's side. ]

I should leave you to any further heroic escapades you might be in the path of.

[Truthfully, Kaveh doesn't know what to think, and he bristles just a little with the urge to say that--but he's bravadoed his way into this situation, okay, he can bravado his way right back out of it.]

Well, let's see. [Hmm. Might as well... try the most obvious solution first, right? He turns back to the shadow, tilting his head slightly.] What'll it take for you to go back?

[He does not expect asking to actually work, but you never know.]
